CO-CURRICULAR

At BIS, we run an extensive co-curricular programme each afternoon and on most weekends.

What is the difference between extra-curricular and co-curricular activities?

The use of the word co-curricular as opposed to extra-curricular highlights our holistic view of the education of your child. These activities do not take part after the school day has finished there are a fundamental part of the pupils’ education. Thus, they are not extra the are co or part of the education that your son or daughter receives at BIS. During co-curricular time soft skills of resilience, confidence, problem solving, leadership and team work are developed. These skills play an important part in the overall development of the child and are proven to have a positive impact on their academic performance.

Our co-curricular sessions between 2.35pm and 3.35pm each day are often referred to as “period 6”. This is in recognition of the fact that the co-curricular programme is a core part of each student’s day. Students, in consultation with their parents, select from a range of activities. These suite of
activities changes each term.

Year 11 students stop co-curricular activities in January each year as 2.35pm. 3.35pm is then allocated to revision sessions.

Activities include but are not limited to:

Athletics Badminton Coding
Debate Model United Nations Tag and Contact rugby
Swimming Rotary Club Robotics
Chess Spanish Philosophy
Dance Mathematics Yoruba
Karate Tennis Art and Photography

During weekends borders will have opportunity to participate in other activities. In addition, both day and boarding students may represent school in a range of sporting and non-sporting competitions both at BIS and as guests of other local schools.

Co-curricular lessons are viewed as part of the pupils’ education. Our high expectations on punctuality, organisation and attendance remain the same throughout the BIS day.
