BIS News Update: Monday 19th May 2014

Last Tuesday i was invited to a meeting with the Area commander of the Lagos police based on Victoria island to discuss security issues around schools. It was very clear from what the Commander said that the security of schools is a very high priority and will remain so for the foreseeable future. The security measures we have in place here at BIS are deemed to be adequate at present but we will remain vigilant.

The Mid YIS Meeting that was planned for last Tuesday will now be held tomorrow Tuesday 20th May in the ICT room, all Year 7-8-9 parents are most welcome to attend.

On Monday of last week Mr Laven Melwani of the European University Business School was in school to meet with Year 9 and year 10 students.  Mr. Melwani gave a most interesting talk on the opportunities for Business education in a number of different parts of Europe.

Under the direction of Miss Tang our Year 10 students are preparing for the annual Duke of Edinburgh’s International award Expedition. In addition to such ventures DoE students are also expected to carry out service in the community and we have formed links with a local charity  to look at the possibility of supporting a library development in a local school. More details of this exciting opportunity for our students to contribute to the wider community will follow.

Congratulations to our boys Basketball team who competed in the Flygerian Middle School Basketball Tournament held at the American School last Saturday taking a very creditable second place in the competition attended by eight other schools.

Our Year 11 students are now well into this Year’s Examination session and the feedback from them so far has been very positive. However we will not know how successful they have been until the results come out in August but I am very hopeful.

I am sure you are aware that school closes for half term on Friday 23rd May and will reopen on Monday 2nd June. Before we close on Friday we will be holding a mufti day for all students. The theme of the mufti day will be a ‘touch of green’ and all funds raised will go towards various environmental projects around the school.
