BIS Principal's Newsletter 2nd March 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The month of March has arrived already and this half term has been a busy one in its first two weeks. The leadership team has been in a series of meetings with our link COBIS (Council of British International Schools) representative who will be visiting us in the middle of June this year. This visit is the five year 'health check' of the school by COBIS which reaffirms our membership with them and that we are compliant with both UK and International School criteria.

In addition to this, myself and the Vice Principal have been meeting with our Middle Leadership team members and securing our priorities for the school. As we close this term, you will receive an outline and description of purpose of our revised Leadership structure and the key aims and objectives of our Strategic Development Plan.

On Thursday 22 and Friday 23 February 2018, BIS hosted a training event for a total of 130 teachers from 43 International Schools. The training focussed on the new IGCSE and AS/A level specifications for Economics and Physics being taught from September 2018.

We look forward to hosting more of these events in the future.

Thursday 22 March 2018:This will be a fundraising day across the whole school. The theme for the day is CHARACTER DAY.

Punctuality to School and Late Detentions.

Thank you very much parents in helping us become a more punctual school. We are now securely down to 5 latecomers each day. The February award for attendance and punctuality will be given in the Principals assembly next week.

The daily detention cycle will continue with each latecomer's parent will receive a phone call from the school informing them their child will be in late detention. Any student who is due to attend an extra-curricular club must attend the detention and not the club.

Reasons for lateness are still dominated by 'traffic' - this is the nature of roads in Lagos and therefore must be planned for. So please add 15 to 20 minutes to your journey time if your child has arrived late to school. Sibling drop offs to school are still an issue, with some exam year students arriving late. If you are a parents of one of our frequent flyers, you will receive a phone call this week asking you to attend an interview at the school.

I ask you all, parents and guardians, to make sure each and every BIS student is at school on time in the future. Please help us safeguard your child here at school - if they are not registered, the fire and evacuation procedures will not be securely and effectively met.

School Fee Payment.

We ask all parents to adhere to the school policy on fee payment. Late payment of fees impairs the School's ability to honour its financial commitments and ensure that your child receives quality education. Thank you to all of you who have already submitted your fees. We are continuing our following up of outstanding fees. Please contact the accounts department if you wish to talk with us about problems with school fee payment.

Parent Appointments with the Principal and the Senior Leadership Team.

If you wish to meet with a member of the Senior Leadership Team, please ring the Principals PA on 0908 701 4833 to book an appointment. You will be asked for a meeting focus (a reason for the meeting) and your child's name and tutor group. The reason and focus of the meeting is not the actual detail of a future discussion but a focus area such as Teaching and Learning, Bullying or Behaviour Issues. We will always require the focus to be given. Your appointment will be booked into the member of the leadership team's diary who is best placed to deal with that issue (see table below). Please do not expect to be immediately placed into the Principal's appointment diary. All meetings will be recorded, all meetings will have clear actions for follow up and be acted upon within 7 working days.
