BIS Principal's Newsletter 26th January 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The mock exams have now come to the end and the students are receiving their marked scripts back from teachers. The students should be commended on their approach and discipline to these exams. This end of mock exams is the start of the preparation for the summer exams. Please work with your child to help them put into place a clear study plan with appropriate rest and relaxation time.

Please can I remind all parents that the next teacher-parent conference day on Friday 9 February 2018 is for parents of years 11 and 12 and parents of year 10 English and Additional Maths ONLY.Parents of years 7, 8 and 9 are welcome to come into school to collect the progress report but we ask you not to meet with teachers on this day.

All parents are welcome to make appointments with subject teachers if they wish to discuss an issue.

Punctuality to School and Late Detentions.

Thank you very much parents in helping us become a more punctual school.Needless to say the daily detention cycle will continue. Each latecomer's parent will receive a phone call from the school informing them their child will be in late detention. Any student who is due to attend an extra-curricular club must attend the detention and not the club.

Reasons for lateness are still dominated by 'traffic' - this is the nature of roads in Lagos and therefore must be planned for. So please add 15 to 20 minutes to your journey time if your child has arrived late to school. Sibling drop offs to school are still an issue, with some exam year students arriving late. If you are a parents of one of our frequent flyers, you will receive a phone call this week asking you to attend an interview at the school.

PLEASE MAKE SURE STUDENTS ARRIVE ON TIME FOR REGISTRATION AT 8:00am.

LATENESS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

ALL ARRIVALS AFTER 8:01am WILL BE BOOKED AS LATE.

AFTER 8:15am ALL CARS ENTERING THE CAMPUS WILL BE REQUIRED TO COLLECT A VISITORS PASS.

I ask you all, parents and guardians, to make sure each and every BIS student is at school on time in the future. Please help us safeguard your child here at school - if they are not registered, the fire and evacuation procedures will not be securely and effectively met.

Authorised and Unauthorised Absences.

We have introduced a standardised British School registration coding and reporting system. As a COBIS school, we are required to monitor authorised and unauthorised absence as well as reasons for absence and lateness.

From Monday 29 January 2018, every absence from school will now be given a code for either authorised absence or unauthorised absence.

Authorised absences will be those where the student is sick and the parent has provided a note/email to the registrar or tutor explaining the illness.  Medical appointments are not 'sick' appointments and include any planned appointment with a doctor, dentist, hospital etc.. We ask for documentation for proof of these appointments in advance of the medical absence.

Unauthorised absence will be any absence where the school does not receive documentation or a note/email explaining the absence from the parent. Holidays are classified as unauthorised absence unless approved by the Senior Leadership Team at least half a term in advance of the holiday leave.

Home Study Materials for Students Absent from School.

We will happily set home based work for students who are on long term medical leave. However we will not be setting work if a student is off school for a short term illness (to allow them to recover and recuperate), if the absence is unauthorised and if the student is taken out of school for a holiday.

IGCSE examination entry.

You will have received a form this week asking you to confirm the level of entry and the number of entries your child has been listed for. Please return this form to the registrar with amendments if necessary.

Once we have these forms back we can submit the entry list to The British Council. The submission date for entries for exams is 9 February 2018. Late entries or late changes of entries will be hit with higher fee costs.

PLEASE NOTE: these entry submission timelines and the deadline are set by The British Council and the CIE exam board NOT by the school.

The accounts department have already contacted you with exam fee payment deadline of 2 February 2018.  Parents, please note that we are only able to enter your child for their IGCSE subjects if fees are up to date.

School Fee Payment.

We ask all parents to adhere to the school policy on fee payment. Late payment of fees impairs the School's ability to honour its financial commitments and ensure that your child receives quality education. Thank you to all of you who have already submitted your fees. We are now following up outstanding fees.

Modern Foreign Language Department French Trip to Paris, France

This trip will take place between 25th March 2018  1st April 2018.

Thank you for registering your child/children's interest in the above trip. We are on the verge of applying for our visas. To facilitate this vital process, we should be much obliged to you if you could provide ALL the required documents stated in the 'FRANCE VISA REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS (MINOR) papers your child/ children were given during the last meeting held by the MFL department. These documents should be with either Ms. Adefolalu or Mrs. Adefarakan by Monday 29th of January 2018.

Could I remind you that the deadline for the second payment (1,500 pounds) for the trip is fast approaching? The deadline is Wednesday 31st January, 2018.

Weekend Activities for Boarders

Boarding is an integral part of the school. Consequently, weekend activities are carefully planned for our boarders and they are supervised by house parents and teachers. This term and next, we are looking at increasing the number of activities organised for boarders. Some of these activities might attract a fee, especially if we have to engage the services of non BIS personnel. In light of this, we would like to increase the pocket money for boarders from 15,000 naira to 25,000 naira per term. This would afford boarders the opportunity of signing up for quite a number of the proposed activities. These activities include:

1)      Cinema

2)      Go-Karting

3)      Visits to the museum

4)      Visits to Terra Culture

5)      Hair weaving

6)      Bead making

7)      Knitting/sewing

8)      Mat weaving

Requests for Year 10 Option Changes.

We have had a few requests from students to change their subjects for IGCSE. Please note, there will be no further option changes for the year 10 cohort.

Football Team Training.

2:40pm, every Tuesday: football team training for boys and girls from 7 and 8.

2:40pm, every Wednesday: football team training for boys and girls from year 9.

Please note that this training is only for the football team squad members.

Parent Appointments with the Principal and the Senior Leadership Team.

If you wish to meet with a member of the Senior Leadership Team, please ring the Principals PA on 0908 701 4833 to book an appointment. You will be asked for a meeting focus (a reason for the meeting) and your child's name and tutor group. The reason and focus of the meeting is not the actual detail of a future discussion but a focus area such as Teaching and Learning, Bullying or Behaviour Issues. We will always require the focus to be given.Your appointment will be booked into the member of the leadership team's diary who is best placed to deal with that issue (see table below). Please do not expect to be immediately placed into the Principal's appointment diary. All meetings will be recorded, all meetings will have clear actions for follow up and be acted upon within 7 working days.
