BIS Principal's Newsletter 14th December 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Apologies for this late newsletter in this last week of the first term of this academic year. The new style end of term full academic reports have been collated will be ready for parents to receive on Friday during the end of term Parent-Teacher Consultation Day - details are below.

Thank you very much from all the staff here at the school for the support you have given us across this term. It has been very much appreciated.

Before this newsletter gets into the business part, may I extend to you all the biggest season's greetings and the warmest wishes for the coming New Year welcome. I hope that you will all have a joyful and happy period with your families and we look forward to seeing you in 2018 for term 2.

Punctuality to School.

My favourite subject appears again

This week has seen a significant increase on Monday of latecomers to school - 31 in one day.  There was then a drop in numbers for the other days. As we close on Friday detentions will be postponed due to the evening events and commitments staff have in school.

Please note, that from Monday 8 January 2018, there will be daily detentions for latecomers. This means if a student is late on Monday, they will be in detention on Monday evening. If a student is late on Tuesday, they will have a detention on Tuesday - and this will continue through the week. This is to prevent the frequent flyers only receiving one detention for 3 or 4 days late.

I ask you all, parents and guardians, to make sure each and every BIS student is at school on time in the future. Please help us safeguard your child here at school - if they are not registered, the fire and evacuation procedures will not be securely and effectively met.

Attendance to School.

From January 2018, 100% attendance will be rewarded with certificates at the close of the academic year. These will be for individual students who are not late to school. There will also be awards for tutor groups who collectively secure 100% attendance each month.

From January, awards will be for 100% present and punctual.

Parent/teacher consultation morning

Our next parents and teachers meeting will be in New Horizons from 8am to 12 noon on Friday 15th December 2017.  Reports can be collected on that day.  At 9:15am the morning will be briefly suspended so that the Principal address parents in the Library.

Please note that there is a staff end of year event at 12:30pm and we ask you to arrive with sufficient time to see any all teachers on your child's report prior to 12:00 noon. Thank you.

New Term 2018

Boarders resume on Sunday 7 January 2018.

School resumes for all other students on Monday 8 January 2018, 8:00 sharp for registration with form tutors.

The term will start with Day 1 of the timetable.

Mock examinations for Years 10, 11 and 12.

Mock examinations will begin on Wednesday 10th January and conclude on Tuesday 23rd January.  For students in Years 11 and 12 study leave will begin at 2:35pm Tuesday 9th January.  Year 12 students will resume lessons on Monday 22nd January and Year 11 students will return to class from Wednesday 24th January.  A letter detailing study leave arrangements will be sent to each family.  Year 10 students do have a small number of mock examinations as they will sit a few IGCSE examinations this coming summer.  Year 10 do not have study leave and are expected to be in lessons throughout the mock examination period.  The mock examinations provide an ideal opportunity for students to experience a busy period of full length IGCSE/AS examination papers and I would encourage all students to prepare thoroughly over the holiday period for these important examinations.

NCUK public examinations.

Year 12 students studying the NCUK qualification for accelerated entry to university will have their first public examinations in the week beginning Monday 15th January.  Due to the condensed nature of this programme students are required to attend directed study sessions on Wednesday 10th, Thursday 11th, Friday 12th and Tuesday 16th January.  We wish them every success.

The next newsletter will be in January 2018.

Finally, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

Yours sincerely,

Linda Potticary
